Our Steering Committee is a group of neighbors who share a common concern about the deferred maintenance of our parks and open spaces.
I have lived in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood for over ten years, including three living on Buena Vista Park. I am a mother to two young daughters, own two dogs, and use the park every day with my family. I am an architect and work in the solar industry.
I have lived across the street from Buena Vista Park for 40 years. When I first moved to San Francisco, I worked for a youth services non-profit, Morrisania West. Subsequently, I spent 25 years in the recycling field. Since 2004, I have been operating a company managing executive rentals. I have served on a number of boards, including Morrisania West, Neighborhood Parks Council, and a community biodiesel effort. I have a BA from UCSB.
I am a retired economist/strategic planner now writing mysteries - both novels and short stories. I've lived in the neighborhood almost four years, not long, but I am firmly planted. My youngest son and his family live around the corner. As a planner, I worked primarily in local and regional economic development, and one thing I learned over and over was the importance of the environment, including green spaces, to a successful community. I am reminded of this every morning when my dog and I walk up the hill to Buena Vista Park. I became involved in work on Adah's Staircase and through that, this effort to support our neighborhood parks. I also a volunteer in Reading Partners; children are my other cause.I have a BA in Econ from Duke and a Masters in Regional Planning from UNC-Chapel Hill and was a member of AICP.
I have been a concerned supporter of Buena Vista Park for the last 15 years. I helped draft the Buena Vista Park Capital Improvement Plans and have been involved with efforts to improve city services, obtain funding for park improvement, and target hazardous trees in Buena Vista Park for removal. I am currently working with other neighborhood residents to turn Buena Vista, Corona Heights and the adjacent open spaces into a Green Benefit District that would give local residents more control over park and open space management and better access to city resources. I'm a graduate of UC Berkeley and works as a professional landscaper designer. I have lived in the neighborhood for 33 years - 20 with my husband and beloved dog Toby.
As an East Bay native, I have happily called Buena Vista Ave home for the past three years, after being lured to the neighborhood by corner-to-corner park views. I'm a licensed landscape architect and founder of YardKit, a company making landscape renovations easier and more affordable for homeowners. I have also worked for boutique design firms in San Francisco to drive construction projects for cities, universities, and campuses. My passion for enjoying and caring for our natural resources extends from my career to a never-ending stream of new outdoor hobbies — I'm currently spending weekends training for cyclocross races and attempting to surf.
Raised on the peninsula, I have been a City resident for over 40 years. During 29 of those years, and while raising two children, it has been a treat and a privilege to live in the Haight near Buena Vista Park. As VP Director of Broadcast Production and Business Affairs for several national advertising agencies, I spent a third of my working time out of town on film and radio productions. Now retired, it has been a joy to have time to investigate the City’s open spaces on foot. Participating in the GBD Steering Committee is my first experience in a grassroots community effort. It was easy to see that a GBD will be transformative for the area, especially for young families who have recently moved in. I am inspired to contribute all I can to its success.
I have lived in San Francisco since 1997 and moved to Upper Terrace by Mt. Olympus Park in 2002 with my husband, Stephan Blachowski. I was elected President of Mt. Olympus Neighborhood Ass'n this year, after serving as Secretary for several years. I volunteer in the park and use all the open spaces in the neighborhood especially while walking my dog Helga. I believe in civic engagement locally - I am a member of the San Francisco Opera, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, SFMOMA, Frameline, SF AIDS Foundation and GLBT Historical Society - and nationally - I am on the National Board of Directors of Lambda Legal and a member of NCLR, ACLU and Human Rights Campaign. I am a full-time real estate broker affiliated with Vanguard Properties in its Castro office and also a licensed attorney, now retired from my 25-year commercial litigation practice.
I am a resident on Buena Vista Park since 1957. I organized Friends of Buena Vista Park in 1982 to conduct monthly work days. I was the founder and Executive Director of the Neighborhood Parks Council, now the SF Parks Alliance. We put the first bond for neighborhood parks in 50 years on the ballot in 2000 and spearheaded the renewal of the Open Space Fund. I was also co-founder of the National AIDS Memorial Grove, and founding President of Friends of the Urban Forest. I have a PhD in Environmental Planning from UC Berkeley.
